When I first got my last role of film back from developing, I wasn’t sure whether or not I wanted to post this photograph; for some reason I really like it, but it’s a picture of a donut! And it’s blurry and half of it is over exposed! But today I came across something that Brian Ferry wrote in his photography blog, and it really inspired me.  He had recently been looking at architect John Pawson’s new book called “A Visual Inventory.”  He writes about how Pawson uses photography as a way to record his observations.  The book includes his photos and words, and according to Brian Ferry, while there doesn’t seem to be a narrative or story in his recent book, his photos are beautiful. This reminded me of the donut photo, and I realize now that it is an important photo to keep in my photo “sketchbook,” because, for some reason it inspired me; it is a record of my inspiration, an image that clicks for me in some way. I like this idea, that photos can be little observations or records of inspiration, creating as Brian Ferry says, a “photographic sketchbook.”  I am not sure why yet, but I think it will be cool to keep in my visual diary to see what comes of it, or what it leads to etc. Not every photo has to tell a larger story (DUUUH, RIGHT? sometimes I forget).
